General Charles Stone was the commander of the Union soldiers, and General Nathan Evens was the commander of the confederate soldiers. Stone was content of taking over Leesburg, the town in front of Balls Bluff. He and his troops were going through Balls Bluff and the confederates suprirse counter-attacked them. The Union was expecting reinforcements to cross the river to aid them. But the union didn't know that they only had 4 boats for the many reinforcements (Which had to cross the Potomac River them selves). The Union led 1,702 men into battle, and the confederates had 1,709 men in the battle. When the battle ended, the union had 1,002 casualties, while the confederates only had 149 casualties. The confederates also captured 553 union prisoners.
